ph.d, positions are available in dr stan group at rutgers university, starting as soon as the fall 2022 or winter 2023. these positions are fully supported (tuition and salary), through a teaching assistantship award (ta) in the first year, and either a ta or a research assistantship in the following years. our research group is located in the north campus of rutgers university, in newark (30 minutes from new york city). for information about our physics department, see https://sasn.rutgers.edu/academi ... departments/physics . this position is for students interested in a ph.d. in ultrafast condensed matter and hydrodynamics, based on experiments performed at large x‐ray laser facilities. x-ray lasers are the newest and the most advanced type of x-ray sources, and enable breakthrough studies in a wide range of fields from biology to astrophysics. for an introduction to our research, see our group web page at https://ultrafastx.github.io/ . we are particularly interested in how matter transforms at the molecular scale and at the nanoscale during rapid phase transitions starting from the liquid phase, to either solids (by crystallization) or to vapor (by cavitation). such phase transitions are initiated by a relatively small number of molecules generating a nanoscale nucleation event, but then lead to a complete phase transformation in the entire system. capturing the initial stages of a phase transition is a difficult and very important problem in thermodynamics and condensed matter physics. to solve this problem, we develop cutting-edge techniques for both experiments and data analysis, and apply them to experiments that we conduct at us and international x-ray laser facilities. our work with x-ray lasers already produced several high-impact publications with substantial coverage in the press (see our website for examples). our work requires solving both experimental and simulation/modeling problems in the fields of ultrafast x-ray and optics, fluid dynamics, and condensed matter. consequently, the available ph.d. positions can fit students with a general physics background, and interests in any of these areas. our current projects include studying cavitation in liquids at nanosecond time scales (project supported by an nsf grant), nonequilibrium crystallization in supercooled liquids, and development of liquid targets for petawatt lasers such as the eli-np facility in bucharest, romania. students interested in this opportunity should contact me via email at claudiu.stan@rutgers.edu . |
