Oswald ripening 奥斯特瓦尔德熟化 Oswald Ripening On prolonged heat treatment, the precipitates coarsen to decrease the interfacial free energy between the precipitate and the matrix. This process is called Oswald ripening. During Oswald ripening the volume fraction Vf of precipitates remains constant and the diameter of the precipitates increases. Small particles dissolve and the resultant material deposits on larger particles causing them to grow.  Basic schematic of the Ostwald ripening process Ostwald ripening is an observed phenomenon in solid (or liquid) solutions which describes the evolution of an inhomogenous structure over time.
