postdoctoral positions in synthesis of oligosaccharides and sulfate oligosaccharides
at wayne state university, detroit, michigan
two postdoctoral positions are available in the laboratory of professor hien nguyen in the department of chemistry at wayne state university for candidates with expertise in the chemical synthesis of oligosaccharides and sulfated oligosaccharides. the goals of the project are
(1) to prepare panels of oligosaccharides to examine their capacity as vaccine adjuvants;
(2) to prepare panels of sulfated oligosaccharides to examine their ability as potent inhibitors of heparanase and sars-cov-2 spike protein as well as to evaluate their ability to prevent p-tau-elicited neurotoxicity for potential treatment of alzheimer’s disease. the ultimate aim is to develop carbohydrate-based therapeutics for various diseases.

ph.d. degree in organic chemistry, chemical biology, or medicinal chemistry with extensive experience in organic synthesis and/or carbohydrate synthesis, including an ability to identify target carbohydrates of biological importance as well as to design and employ chemical syntheses to obtain these compounds. experience with various spectroscopic technologies including nmr and mass spectrometry for organic compounds characterization is essential. expertise in binding assays is also essential.

carl johnson/pfizer professor of organic chemistry, wayne state university
hien m nguyen, wayne state university 讲席教授。1996年本科毕业于tufts university,  导师为marc d’alarco教授,2003年博士毕业于university of illinois at urbana-champaign,师从david gin教授。2003 ╟ 2006年在stanford university进行博士后研究,导师为barry trost教授。nguyen教授2009年加入university of iowa,并于2013年获得终身教职,升任副教授。2018年,nguyen教授以carl johnson professor of chemistry讲习教授身份加入wayne state university化学系,工作至今。nguyen教授已经在j. am. chem. soc., angew. chem. int. ed., chem. sci.,acs cata. 等权威杂志上发表文章,并获得多个奖项。课题组研究条件一流,经费充足,目前以pi身份主持nih在研项目4项。

研究方向
the research program in the laboratory of professor nguyen lies at the crossroads of organic chemistry, chemical biology, organocatalysis, and transition-metal catalysis. the broad goals of our group are
(1) to design and synthesize sulfated oligosaccharides and multivalent carbohydrate molecules (glycopolymers) as potent inhibitors of heparanase for treatment of cancers;
(2) to design and synthesize heparan sulfate-like oligosaccharides and glycopolymers to inhibit sars-cov-2 virus-cell entry, thereby inhibiting progeny virus release from infected cell and spread;
(3) to study saponin molecules as novel vaccine adjuvants for use in humans to combat a range of infectious diseases;
(4) to develop carbohydrate molecules to control of hyperphosphorylated tau-mediated cell dysfunction and death;
(5) to develop catalytic stereoselective glycosylation mediated by organocatalysts for the synthesis of bioactive oligosaccharides and glycopeptides; and
(6) to investigate rhodium/iridium-catalyzed asymmetric allylic fluorination and amination as well as regioselective radio-fluorination for potential use as pet radiotracers. overall, all of the research projects are target candidates for therapeutic drugs and pet radiotracers
