Graphite nanoparticles (GNPs) as a filler for the purpose of reinforcing epoxy were synthesized via electrochemically oxidizing route. In the as-prepared GNPs were introduced certain oxygen functional groups, with crystalline structure of graphite partially remained. GNPs could be exfoliated and well dispersed into the epoxy matrix with the aid of ultrasonic processing technique. The addition of GNPs has enhanced the thermal stability of epoxy by ca. 19 ℃, together with the 17 MPa and 6 % improvements of mechanical strength and toughness, respectively, with 5 wt.% GNPs loading.
