Plastics are essential to create a more sustainable society, and to ensure that future technologies develop rapidly and cost effectively. They should be recycled and reused. Mechanical recycling is a common way, and each time plastic is recycled this way, its quality degraded. The polymer chains are partially broken-down during processing, decreasing its mechanical property, viscosity, etc. The same piece of plastic can only be recycled about 2-3 times before its quality decreases to the point where it can no longer be used. This project aims to study the recyclability of plastics and their composites for high volume manufacturing applications, improving the cycle times by optimising processing conditions to maintain polymer property. This research can help to tackle some of the most daunting challenges that our world faces, aiming to create closedloop recycling, which plastic is repeatedly recycled and reused without compromising the quality of the material.
