Dear Roboticists

We have one fully-funded PhD position at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) to begin in January 2022.

Our group (www.romi-lab.org) is pioneering in the development of methods for *Robot Thermal Servoing*?, a new paradigm at the intersection of automatic control, thermodynamics, and multimodal perception. Prospective applicants should have (or about to complete) a master's in control/mechanical engineering or related disciplines. We are looking for exceptional researchers with a strong analytical background and hands-on experience with sensors, algorithms and robots.

Candidates must send the following 3 files:
- Detailed CV (do state your GPA and the national ranking of your undergraduate university)
- Papers (combined as a single file, either published or submitted, demonstrating your knowledge)
- Portfolio (a graphical "slides-like" description of your experience, combined into a single PDF)

Project Description
============================
This project aims to develop the first complete formulation of *robot thermal servoing*, a new control paradigm that enables robots to automatically establish (through its motor actions) a desired thermal exchange between a heat source and an object/system of interest (a sensorimotor behaviour that is extensively exploited by many organisms). Such open research problem has numerous applications across many industries, e.g. cosmetic dermatology, firefighting operations, insect swarm robots, intelligent solar panels, etc. Despite the clear benefits of providing robots with such capabilities, the use of thermoception for motion control has not been addressed in the robotics literature.

Capitalising on our previous work on sensor-based control, this new project sets the objective of establishing a complete, formal and general methodology that enables to conduct thermal servoing tasks with robots. Our proposed idea is to exploit the geometric-thermal-motor relations between a heat source and a surface for computing controls. Since robot thermal servoing has not been formalised yet, the outcomes of the project are expected to lay the foundations of a new generation of sensor-based controls with thermo-motor intelligence.
