phd position in terahertz (thz) spintronic materials and devices (ref # pg1)

the terahertz (thz) frequency range lies between the microwave and infrared regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. the thz frequency region has traditionally been called the terahertz gap, due to the difficulties in generating thz radiation. however, we presently witness the dawn of a new era with breakthroughs in our ability to generate this radiation as well as to probe, manipulate and describe matter in time domain. while thz radiation sensing, imaging, and communication are very powerful applications, they are currently either underutilized or alienated due to the lack of a well-integrated compact platform.

the phd project aims at exploring the spin-to-charge conversion in ferromagnetic (fm)/non-magnetic (nm) heterostructures to realize spintronic wideband thz emitters. the applicant should have a good background in optics& photonics,  magnetism and spintronic materials as well as good hands on experimental skills. access to the university of alberta nanofabrication facility is provided to the phd candidate (https://www.nanofab.ualberta.ca/). it is a merit if the candidate has experience from thz time-domain spectroscopy or thz physics.

phd position in dielectric and metal-free terahertz (thz) plasmonics for extreme light confinement and applications (ref # pg2)

terahertz passive and active components on-chip integrated devices capable of the generation, detection, and manipulation of electromagnetic radiation within the terahertz frequency (0.1-10 thz) are being highly sought after for developing emerging niche technologies for defence, security applications, chemical sensing, covert crowd-screening, and intelligence gathering. however, such a feat has met with several challenges to bring the technology from the laboratory setting to the field for practical implementation.

the phd project aims at exploring: thz properties of the emerging group of highly-doped iv crystalline sigesn semiconductor material using thz time domain spectroscopy (thz-tds) and optical pump-probe time resolved measurements, development of passive sigesn semiconductor passive and active thz devices, and fabrication and characterization of various gesn, sigesn, and gesn/sigesn heterostructure plasmonic passive and active devices for thz chemical sensing and communication. the applicant should have a good background in optics& photonics, nanofabrication, semiconductor materials as well as good hands on experimental skills. access to the university of alberta nanofabrication facility is provided to the phd candidate (https://www.nanofab.ualberta.ca/).  it is a merit if the candidate has experience from thz time-domain spectroscopy or thz physics.

phd position in nonlinear nanoplasmonics (ref # pg3)

recent progress in ultrafast science has led to the development of ultrashort pulses, which have a broad spectral bandwidth and high peak intensities. when these pulses interact with nonlinear plasmonic materials, the combination of high peak powers and large bandwidth opens up new possibilities of novel nonlinear spectral effects and potential applications.

the phd project aims at exploring: si-based nanoplasmonic nonlinear coherent light generation, strong-field driven light-matter interaction in metals and nonlinear media, and nanoplasmonic light control and manipulation of charge transport.  access to the university of alberta nanofabrication facility is provided to the phd candidate (https://www.nanofab.ualberta.ca/).

duration: 1-3 years

position summary: the ultrafast optics and nanophotonics laboratory at the department of electrical and computer engineering is seeking a postdoctoral fellow in the area of terahertz light-matter interaction and material characterization.

the research program focuses on the characterization and manipulation of thz light using high index and highly-doped semiconductor materials. specifically, (1) investigation of all-dielectric frequency selective surfaces for active electrical and optical control of gesn, sigesn, and gesn/sigesn heterostructure on a cmos platform, (2) fabrication and characterization of various gesn, sigesn, and gesn/sigesn heterostructure plasmonic passive and active devices for thz chemical sensing and communication, (3) fabrication and characterization of gesn, sigesn, and gesn/sigesn heterostructure plasmonic waveguides, (4) miniaturization and integration of thz sigesn semiconductor-based components (e.g. frequency filters, splitters, dividers, antennas, resonators, couplers, etc.), and (5) preform thz time-domain spectroscopy.

the ideal candidate must hold a phd degree and have experience working with relevance to terahertz research technology. candidate must have a doctoral degree in electrical engineering, applied physics, terahertz technology or photonics. it would be of great advantage for the applicant to have previous experience in terahertz instrumentation and terahertz characterization of materials. the degree should generally not be older than three years. the successful candidate will be capable of independently leading a research team to meet project milestones.

the incumbent must be and independent researcher who is capable of leading a multidisciplinary research program involving thz radiation research and semiconductor material technology.  the successful candidate will be capable of independently leading a research team to meet project milestones.
