I am sorry that I did not get back to you sooner. For this weekend, we will be working on a few different topics in grammar. There are three main topics that we will look at this weekend and I'll give you a summary of it below. Articles (a, an, the) While most people do not have a problem understand these three small words when they are used, second language learners tend to forget to use them. While not a problem for understanding, it is usually an easy way to tell someone is not a native speaker. Pronouns Some pronouns are simple, like I, he, she, it, they, but they often are underused by non-native speakers Indefinite pronouns are more difficult to deal with. Many, some, one, all and several others can be used as pronouns when speaker about something non-specific. Modal verbs Modal verbs like can, may, should, etc. are very common in English language. We will review several modals and how they are used. For learning these three topics, we will be using some question and answer activites this weekend. As an example, I might ask you a question like "Would you like to buy a house, or buy a car?" And you could answer: "I would rather buy a house, because then I would have a place to live." or "I would rather buy a car, because if I buy a house, I would have no money to buy food." (The modal verbs are in yellow above since that would be part of the focus of the activity) I hope this helps you some. Again, I apologize for not getting this information to you sooner. |

For tomorrow's class there will be two types of topics to talk about. For one group, you will be told something that has happened and asked how you will deal with it. The other is for the class to discuss their thoughts and opinions. For the first group, the scenarios (events), you will be asked specific questions about each event. The topics and questions will be: You are alone on an island. What 5 things do you most want to have with you? What is the first thing you will do? What will you do for food? You get to have lunch with a famous person (alive or dead). For example: (Hu Jintao, Mao Tsedong, Ghandi, Kobe Bryant, etc) What 1 person would you choose? Where do you want to meet them? What would you do together? What would you ask them? You win the lottery (you receive a very large amount of money) What would you like to buy? Would you spend all of your money? Would you travel anywhere, and if so, where? For the second group of topics meant for open discussion the following are some of the questions: Is it a good thing for most countries to have their own form of Money, or would it be better if the world used only one form of money? (Chinese RMB, US Dollar, Japanese Yen, etc.) Would you rather watch TV or read a book? Would you rather your children (if you have any) watch TV or read a book? Should rich people help poor people? Is it important for different countries and different cultures to have their own languages? How important is sleep? How many hours of sleep should a person get? |

For tomorrow's class we will be covering a few different topics. We will start the class with word descriptions. I will ask each person to try and describe a word they don't know how to say, but would like to. After this we are going to work on pronunciation tips, as this has been requested. We will start off with general pronunciation. This website might help some with learning the sounds of vowels http://faculty.washington.edu/dillon/PhonResources/newstart.html We will start the class off with alliteration exercises An alliteration is a phrase or sentence where most words start with the same sound. This activity will be used to allow me to listen to the students repeat certain sounds, so I can hear any difficulties they might be having. After this we are going to start looking specifically at words related to organic chemistry and how to pronounce them. (as this was requested also), if you have any words or terms you wish to learn, feel free to bring them. Once we have finished this, there will be a couple question activities the end. |
