| The effect of Fe0 on the degradation of HCHs and DDX was investigated in original, highly contaminated and naturally aged soil from a former organochlorine pesticides-manufacturing plant. The results showed that treatment with 0.5% (w/w) zerovalent iron (Fe0) could facilitate the degradation of β-HCH, p,p′-DDT, o,p′-DDT and p,p′-DDE, but showed little effect on the degradation of α-HCH, γ-HCH and δ-HCH, what is more, the amount of p,p′-DDD, main dechlorinaed product of p,p′-DDT, basically kept increasing with the adding of Fe0. Because Tween80 showed little effect on the desorption for HCHs and DDX, there was no extra effect on the degradation of HCHs and DDX when Tween80 solution with different concentration (1CMC, 5CMC, 20CMC) was added to the Fe0 treatment. These results suggest that Fe0 could effectively promote the reductive degradation of organochlorine pesticides such as β-HCH, p,p′-DDT, o,p′-DDT and p,p′-DDE, while Tween80 did not show any effect on those processes in such soil which was polluted many years. |

Observation results indicate that treatment with 0.5% (w/w) zerovalent iron (Fe0) can greatly facilitate the degradation of β-HCH, p,p′-DDT, o,p′-DDT and p,p′-DDE, but have little effect on the degradation of α-HCH, γ-HCH and δ-HCH. Moreover, the amount of p,p′-DDD, the primary dechlorinaed product of p,p′-DDT, keeps on increasing with increasing amount of Fe0. Due to the fact that little effect of Tween80 on the desorption for HCHs and DDXhas been observed, no extra effect on the degradation of HCHs and DDX would be expected if Tween80 solution with different concentration (1CMC, 5CMC, 20CMC) is added to the Fe0 treatment. These results suggest that Fe0 can effectively promote the reductive degradation of organochlorine pesticides such as β-HCH, p,p′-DDT, o,p′-DDT and p,p′-DDE, whilst Tween80 do not have any effect on processes in such soil which have been polluted for many years. |
