2-year postdoctoral position at the University of Vigo

(Spain) Description: The manufacture of nitrogen-rich fertilizers is one of the main pillars supporting an increasingly populated planet, which, in turn, relies on the ability to produce ammonia on gigantic chemical plants. The largely optimized Haber-Bosch process dominates this centenarian industry despite requiring high pressure and temperature, purified N2, and H2 produced currently almost exclusively from fossil sources. A distributed and more sustainable emerging scheme considers coupling small- scale renewable-energy plants and electrochemical cells, allowing ammonia to be produced at ambient temperature and pressure. The selective ammonia synthesis is often compromised by the hydrogen evolution reaction, which makes catalyst design key to achieve a commercially viable process. Tasks: - Development of novel catalysts for the electrochemical nitrogen reduction to ammonia. Requirements: - Candidate must possess a PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Materials Chemistry. - Potential applicants should have a proven record of expertise in heterogeneous catalysis, ideally in electrocatalysis. - Candidate should be highly motivated, creative and able to work independently with excellent oral and written English language communication skills. Deadline for application: 31th May 2021.
