PhD Positions in Mechanical Engineering at University of Massachusetts Lowell
Dr. Lei Chen¡¯s Manufacturing Innovation and Neural Interface (MINI) Lab at the University of Massachusetts Lowell (UMass Lowell) is looking for 2 Ph.D. students in the area of advanced manufacturing and interdisciplinary research on next generation brain-machine interface. The candidates will receive full funding (tuition, stipend, and benefits) under National Institutes of Health and Department of Mechanical Engineering at UMass Lowell. The positions are available starting Fall 2021 or Spring 2022 and will stay open until filled.
•        About the university
UMass Lowell is a nationally-ranked public research university in Lowell, MA. Lowell is known as the cradle of the American Industrial Revolution, due to a large series of historic textile mills and factories, located 25 miles northwest of Boston. The Chronicle of Higher Education ranks UMass Lowell as the fastest-growing public doctoral university in New England and the fifth-fastest growing in the U.S. It is also the second-fastest rising institution in the nation and ranked 13th for intellectual property generated.
•        About the professor
Dr. Lei Chen is Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at UMass Lowell. He is a faculty member of the Advanced Composite Materials and Textile Research Laboratory. He also holds adjunct assistant professor position in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Michigan Medical School for his brain-machine interface studies. He received his Ph.D. (2017) and M.S. (2014) in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan, and his B.E. (2013) in Mechatronic Engineering from Zhejiang University in China. •        About the lab
Research of the lab will be focusing on three major areas:
(1) Advanced and smart manufacturing processes: generation of theoretical and fundamental understandings of advanced smart manufacturing processes (both additive and subtractive) through innovative monitoring methods, numerical modelling, data analysis, and collaborations with industry.
(2) Biomedical manufacturing: application of advanced design algorithm and manufacturing technology to advance the safety, quality, cost, efficiency, and speed of healthcare service.
(3) Brain-machine interface / Neural interface: manufacturing technology and cutting mechanics driven development of the next generation neural interface for large-scale chronic communication between our natural intelligence and the artificial intelligence of a machine in the smart society era.
•        Qualifications
Eligible candidates should have a Bachelor or Master¡¯s degree in Mechanical/Industrial/Biomedical Engineering or a closely related field.  The successful candidate would be a highly-motivated researcher with great hands-on skills, strong willingness to learn, and excellent communication skills for broadly collaborative research projects with industry, healthcare, and neuroscience community.  It is desirable that the candidate has practical knowledge and experience in one or more of the following:
Computer-aided design (e.g. Solidworks), Computer-aided manufacturing, Additive manufacturing (3D printing), Machining, Mechatronics and robotics, Control, Materials and mechanics, Statistical analysis, Finite element analysis (e.g. Abaqus, ANSYS, COMSOL), Matlab/Python/C++/LabView programming,
