"Elucidation of the factors controlling the oxidation kinetic of manganese during passive treatment of coal mine water"

Manganese is one of the elements commonly found in coal mine water. However, manganese removal by implementing passive treatment processes is possible but difficult to control. Knowledge of the chemical and biological mechanisms conditioning the kinetics of manganese elimination in planted constructed wetlands is seen as an efficient process for the management of coal mine water. The objective of this thesis is to determine the factors limiting the kinetics of Mn (II) oxidation in existing treatment facilities, in order to propose strategies for improving their efficiency. This objective will be achieved through the analysis of previous data and the acquisition of additional data (mineralogical, biological, geochemical) on real operating passive treatment systems, and the performance of laboratory experiments aimed at elucidating the microbiological mechanisms (biological
direct and / or indirect catalysis) and chemical (potentially antagonistic reactions of oxidation and reduction in presence of iron) controlling the oxidation kinetics of manganese in the form of precipitated oxides. This thesis project, part of a collaborative program between BRGM and IPGP, will benefit from the expertise and complementary experimental and analytical equipment of the laboratories involved.

The PhD duration is three years and the research activities will be mostly developed at Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris (Paris, France) (https://www.ipgp.fr/en) in collaboration with BRGM (https://www.brgm.eu/).
