Overview

Composite structures are advanced in product efficiency, cost effectiveness, and superior in specific strength and modulus. There are increasing demands in their applications to load-carrying structures in aerospace, transportation, construction, and medical equipment. Thus, robust and reliable mechanical measurement and control of composites are essential to reduce safety concerns and maintenance costs for structural design. These include both destructive and non-destructive approaches. Destructive methods are based on the destruction of the state of equilibrium of composites, whereas non-destructive testing (NDT) and evaluation techniques include acoustic emission, ultrasonic testing, infrared thermography, terahertz testing, shearography, digital image correlation, as well as X-ray and neutron diffraction or imaging. Each measurement technique has its own strengths and limitations in achieving full-scale diagnosis of composite structural integrity.

In this Special Collection, we focus on the most recent cutting-edge research and advances in mechanical measurement and control of composite structures, include development of instrumentations and techniques, destructive or non-destructive testing of composites, multiscale failure mechanisms, as well as structural health monitoring, by all means of theoretical, experimental and numerical analysis. Original research and development on advanced manufacturing and characterisation of composite structures are also welcome.

We encourage the submission of original research articles, as well as review articles, covering all aspects of mechanical measurement & control of composite structures.  We hope that this Special Collection will contribute in disseminating the latest progress in this field, as well as stimulating the interests of its audiences to work in this important and vibrant area to promote and benefit the scientific communities.

Potential topics for submissions include but are not limited to:

Process and development of mechanical measurement and control of composite structures

Advances in destructive testing (tension, compression, shear, and impact) of composite structures

Advances in non-destructive testing & evaluation of composites (acoustic, electrical, infrared, optical, terahertz, ultrasonic, or imaging techniques)

Multiscale (micro-, meso- and/or macro-scale) defect and damage evolution

Advanced manufacturing and characterization of composite structures

Finite element analysis

Integrity detection and safety assurance

Structural health monitoring

An article processing charge may apply upon acceptance of your paper.

Guest Editors

Bing Wang is a Professor at the School of Mechanical Engineering & Automation, Fuzhou University, and a Life Member of Clare Hall Cambridge, UK. He received his PhD at the University of Hull (UoH) in Jan 2017, and then became a Research Associate/Fellow at UoH. He moved to the University of Cambridge as a Research Associate in bistable composite technologies from July 2017 to April 2020. Bing is an active peer reviewer for international journals, and has been recognised as an Outstanding Reviewer. He also serves as an Editorial Board Member of an international journal, and a Guest Editor for Advances in Mechanical Engineering. His research interests include composite structures, structural mechanics, non-destructive testing & evaluation, and finite element analysis.

Chao Ge is a Lecturer at the School of Mechatronical Engineering, Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT), China. He received his PhD degree in Material Science and Engineering at BIT in March 2018, and has worked as visiting PhD in University of Hull (UoH) from December 2015 to December 2016. His research interests include the design & fabrication of novel energetic (reactive) composite materials, tests and characterization of mechanical properties of materials, dynamic response of materials and structures under extreme loads. He is currently leading 3 research programs, and as a member won the first-class National Scientific and Technological Progress Award in 2019.

Jin Zhou is a Professor at the Xi'an Jiaotong University, China. He obtained his PhD degree in Aerospace Composite from the University of Liverpool, UK. He was an Honorary Research Fellow working on impact response of lightweight composite structure at the University of Liverpool. He has been a Research Associate working on composite forming at the University of Cambridge, UK. Prior to returning to academic research at Cambridge, he was a Senior Structural Engineer working on structural mechanics in industry. His interests include the impact response of composite materials, sandwich structures, hybrid metal-composite structures, lightweight structures for energy absorption and composites forming.

Zhangming Wu is a Professor at the School of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics, Ningbo University, China, and a joint Lecturer (Assistant Professor) at Cardiff University, UK. He received his PhD degree from Aston University in 2010, and then worked as a PDRA at University of Bristol. He took a short-period lectureship at the University of Strathclyde from September 2014 to April 2016, and then moved to Cardiff University in June 2016. He has developed his research experience in modelling and optimization of aerospace composite materials and structures, smart sensory system, and other related fields. He has published more than 30 peer-reviewed papers in top journals (citation: 903, h-index = 16), and has been invited to give academic presentations at more than 20 international conferences. His research work has received Best Paper awards twice from the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (2014, 2016).
