doctoral researcher and postdoctoral research fellow (environmental engineering and circular economy)

bio and circular economy research group at the faculty of engineering and natural sciences of tampere university is looking for a doctoral researcher and postdoctoral research fellow. the position is suitable for academics with previous experience in environmental engineering, catalytic refinery and/or thermochemical conversion (e.g., hydrothermal conversion, torrefaction, pyrolysis, gasification, chemical looping combustion) of waste streams (e.g., sewage sludge, agro-forest biomass/residues, algae, food wastes, plastics, etc.) to clean bioenergy and novel functional materials, or other emerging clean technologies towards pollutants mitigation and carbon neutrality in laboratory or pilot scale.

job description
the doctoral researcher and postdoctoral research fellow will be working in bio and circular economy research group, which focuses on environmental technology, synthetic biology, and bioenergy and biorefining with the ultimate goal to promote a cleaner and safer future for the benefit of people and the environment. the group covers research from molecular biology level up to biorefinery and power plants and to urban and industrial systems. the group has active collaboration with municipalities and industry and several national and international research organizations.
the primary role of the postdoctoral research fellow is to design, set up and operate different processes for clean bioenergy generation and/or production of biochemical with mitigated pollutants emissions towards carbon neutrality, fabrication of novel waste derived functional materials products. the postdoctoral researcher will have an opportunity to work in different projects and participate in supervising bsc, msc and phd students or in teaching. it is expected that research to be carried out by the postdoctoral researcher results in peer-reviewed articles published in relevant academic journals. the postdoctoral researcher has also possibility to participate in the development of new research initiatives and teaching provided by the unit as well as other general activities of the unit.

requirements
the postdoctoral research fellow applicant should have a doctoral degree in environmental engineering, chemical engineering, bioengineering, or a related field, and have experience on research work related to processes in environmental engineering, chemical and/or energy engineering, catalytic conversion of biomass waste streams to value-added chemicals, biofuels and environmentally friendly materials products, and/or other clean chemical technologies towards environmental pollutants mitigation and carbon neutrality. the applicant should be fluent in both written and verbal english.
the successful applicant is a highly motivated and ambitious researcher. proficiency to carry out goal-oriented work, good cooperation abilities, and high-class skills to deliver oral and written presentations will be emphasized.

• applicable master’s degree
• right to pursue a doctoral degree
• approved study plan and research plan
• ability and motivation, as demonstrated during prior studies towards a degree or otherwise, to work towards and complete a doctoral degree

qualification requirements for postdoctoral research fellow
• applicable doctoral degree
• capacity for independent scholarly or artistic activity
• teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position

candidates are selected based on the level of promise that they show, and this will be evaluated on the basis of their study and research plans, their previous success in studies, and merits in writing the doctoral thesis and / or scientific publishing.

we offer
the position of doctoral researcher will be filled for a fixed-term period of maximum four (4) years and the position of postdoctoral research fellow will be filled for a fixed-term period of maximum two (2) years period. the starting date is 1st april 2021 or as mutually agreed. a trial period of six (6) months applies to all our new employees.

the salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee’s personal performance in accordance with the salary system of finnish universities. according to the criteria applied to teaching and research staff, the position of a doctoral researcher is placed on level 2—4 of the job requirements scale. the position of a postdoctoral research fellow is placed on levels 5-6. a typical starting salary for doctoral researchers is approximately 2400 eur/month and for postdoctoral research fellow 3500 eur/month.
