PHD scholarships Available in the area of Organic Chemistry/ Polymer Chemistry/ Chemical
Engineering in the School of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering

Research Topic:
Carbon nanotubes are ideal materials for field effect transistors. However, its applications are
plagued by the problem of as-synthesized nanotubes comprising both metallic and semiconducting
nanotubes. Metallic nanotubes cause low on/off ratio. Separation of metallic from semiconducting
nanotubes, based on electronic property, is a key worldwide challenge. The student shall be able to
work in the forefront of nanotechnology, and be trained in various sophisticated techniques and do indepth
scientific studies. He shall work alongside a large group of scientists and students working in
this related area.
Job description: the Ph.D student shall work on separation of metallic and
semiconducting carbon nanotubes. He/she shall develop small compounds or
polymers to separate metallic and semiconducting carbon nanotubes.
Requirements: Good GPA for Bachelors Degree from a good university in either
Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or Polymer Science. It is preferable to have good
GRE/TOEFL.
Professor Mary Chan-Park
Dr Chan-Park did her PhD in polymers in MIT in 1993. She then did her postdoctoral fellow under
the sponsorship of Dow Corning (USA). She worked for 10 years in industries in various technical
management positions in USA and Singapore. She was a senior technical manager in Sipix Imaging
(CA, USA) from 1999-2001. She then joined the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) as
Associate Professor in 2001. She is currently also Associate Chair of the School of Chemical and
Biomedical Engineering in NTU.
Dr Chan-Park has a vibrant research group with 6 postdoctoral fellows and 9 PhD/Masters. She has
recently won the highly competitive grant for 5-year research in carbon nanotubes. Her current
interests are in Printed Carbon Nanotubes Electronics. She has published about 100 peered review
papers (in Advanced Functional Materials, Small, Chem Mat, Langmuir, Macromolecules, Applied
Physics Letters, Nanotechnology, etc). She has also got 15 patents and several patent applications.
