Crystallinity changes in cellulose hydrolysis The changes of crystal structure during cellulose hydrolyzed in a microwave reaction system was analyzed by X-ray diffraction. Figure 1 shows X-ray diffraction spectra before and after the microwave reactions. The following peaks are assigned: 2θ is 14.7 ° at 101 crystal plane, 2θ is 16.5 ° at 102 crystal plane , 2θ is 22.5 ° at 002 crystal plane and 2θ is 004 at crystal plane 34.5 °. It also can be seen from Figure 1, the peak intensity decreases when 2θ is 22.5° after 1h microwave radiation. This indicates that the crystal structure of cellulose had been demolished, the crystallinity of cellulose was also decreased along with the microwave reaction progress, from 91.7% to 88.8%. |

There are some corresponding peak positions as follows: 2θ is 14.7° at 101 crystal plane; 2θ is 16.5° at 102 crystal plane; 2θ shows 22. 5° at 002 crystal plane and 2θ is 34. 5° at 004 crystal plane. From the chart, after 1h as microwave radiation, 22.5° of 2θ of peak intensity was decreased. It indicating that crystal structure of cellulose had been destroyed, while fiber crystallinity was also reduced from 91.7% to 88.8% during reaction. |

Crystallinity Variation in the Hydrolysis Reaction of Cellulose X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique was applied to analyze the crystallinity variation in the hydrolysis reaction of cellulose carried out in microwave system. In Fig. 1 XRD data for cellulose before and after microwave treatment was shown. The peak assignment is as followings: 2θ = 14.7° originates from crytsal plane of (101), 2θ = 16.5° from (102), 2θ = 22.5° from (002) and 2θ = 34.5° from (004). Meanwhile, it is visible in Fig. 1 that the peak intensity decreases at 2θ = 22.5° after microwave radiation of 1 hr, indicating partial demolishment of the crystal structure of cellulose. The crystallinity further decreases with extended microwave reaction time from 91.7% to 88.8%. |
