postdoc position in neurobiology and physiology, University of Virginia

The Department of Molecular Physiology and Biological Physics seeks a highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Associate with expertise in Physiology and/or Neuroscience. The research associate will work in the lab of Professor Huiwang Ai (https://med.virginia.edu/ai-lab/). The lab uses interdisciplinary approaches in biophysics, chemistry, engineering, and physiology to study and manipulate complex biological systems, with a focus on the development of novel molecular biosensors to peer into cells and organisms to understand biosignaling and communications. This position will focus on the development and applications of fluorescent-protein-based biosensors. In particular, the candidate will engineer fluorescent biosensors for signaling chemicals that are related to brain and beta-cell activities. The candidate will further characterize the biosensors and apply them to microscopic imaging of live cells and animals. Preparation of scientific posters and manuscripts is expected. Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in: (1) neurobiology, including in vivo mouse brain imaging and/or optogenetics, (2) electrophysiology such as patch clamp, (3) neurodegenerative diseases and animal models (e.g., Alzheimer's disease), or (4) beta-cell physiology and diabetic mouse models. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Education: PhD or MD by date of hire. Experience: Provide evidence of successful peer-reviewed publications; Strong interests and relevant expertise in development of genetically encoded imaging tools such as fluorescent and bioluminescent biosensors, or integration of tool development with biological questions in neurobiology, beta-cell biology, and/or diabetes.
