It was founded under an international legal framework to perform interdisciplinary research, deploy and communicate nanotechnology for the benefit of society. INL aims to be a recognized leading global nanotechnology innovation hub. Project Specifications: This project is funded by Programa Operacional Fatores de Competitividade (POFC)/Compete Name of the project: Mobilizador Baterias 2030 Reference number: 14/SI/2019 - PROGRAMAS MOBILIZADORES Introduction INL is seeking a highly qualified and experienced Research Fellow in the area of electrocatalysis, to develop atomically dispersed catalysts for use in PEM and alkaline water electrolysis. The Baterias 2030 project aims to demonstrate different energy storage technologies as a central element for urban sustainability. Converting renewable energy into storable and dispensable hydrogen fuel is one of the major technologies to be developed in this project. In particular, new efficient electrocatalysts will be integrated and demonstrated in kW-scale electrolyzers, together with partners from academia and industry. Job Role & Key Responsibilities The Research Fellow will undertake the following main activities and responsibilities: To synthesize atomically dispersed platinum group metal (PGM) and non-PGM catalysts; To perform physicochemical characterization of prepared materials; To assess the electrocatalytic performance of the catalysts synthesized; To work on upscale synthesis of atomically dispersed catalysts; To report experimental progress regularly and to publish the project results in scientific journals; To disseminate the project results to different target groups; Other lab maintenance/management/supervision tasks assigned by the Group Leader. Job Requirements Candidates should meet the following requirements: Qualifications PhD Degree in Materials Science and Engineering, Electrochemistry, Physical Chemistry, Solid State Physics, or any other relevant field. Experience and Technical Skills Have R&D experience in water electrolysis for at least 2 years but no more than 10 years after PhD; Have several important publications in high-impact journals in the field and/or have one or more patents filed/granted on electrocatalysis; Have hands-on experience in the synthesis and electrocatalytic performance of atomically dispersed catalysts; Have hands-on experience in one or several of the following topics will be positively evaluated: noble metal nanoparticle synthesis, synthesis and design of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), upscale synthesis of nanomaterials (kilogram scale), membrane electrode assembly (MEA) fabrication, fabrication, and design of water electrolyzers (stacks), DFT calculations. Personal Skills Strong motivation to work, both independently and as part of a team in an interdisciplinary environment; Good communication skills; “Hands-on” approach combined with a high commitment in respecting working deadlines; High organization and dynamism; Self-motivated and self-disciplinary. Note: Candidates should not have a labor contract with INL during the 12 months before the application. Languages Excellent communication skills in English are required since it is the working language of INL. Supervision The work plan will be developed at the INL under the scientific guidance of Dr. Lifeng Liu. The successful candidate will be integrated in the Nanomaterials for Energy Storage and Conversion (NESC) Group. Duration of the contract The total duration of the employment contract shall be 30 months and may be renewed based on the performance of the individual. The expected starting date is January 2021.
