Applications are invited for a fully funded 4-year PhD position in Geotechnical Engineering. The position starting date is Jan 2021.

Research project: The PhD position involves laboratory and simulation research in hydro-chemo-mechanically coupled processes in porous media with relevance to carbon capture and storage (CCS). Global energy consumption keeps increasing to maximize human wellbeing, economic development and poverty alleviation. However, our energy system is dominated by burning fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas), which produces carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases – the fundamental driver of global climate change. In CCS, a relatively pure stream of CO2 from industrial or energy-related sources are captured, compressed and injected into terrestrial or marine reservoirs. Chemical reactions between acidified brine and rock minerals lead to dissolution and precipitation of minerals. Mineral dissolution and precipitation modify rock strength and injection efficiency. The scholarship aims to provide the opportunity to work within this exciting interdisciplinary research field. The successful candidate is expected to conduct combined experimental and numerical research to advance our understanding of precipitation and dissolution in porous media and the evolution of rock strength and hydraulic conductivity. The candidate will adopt advanced non-destructive imaging techniques, i.e. X-ray computed tomography, and geomechanical simulation methods such as discrete element method.

Supervisor: Dr Budi Zhao (Lecturer / Assistant Professor)

Location:  University College Dublin, Belfield, Dublin 4, Ireland

Applicant Requirements: We are seeking a highly enthusiastic PhD candidate with the ability to independently plan and conduct the research project while integrating into an interdisciplinary research environment. Applicants should have a first or upper second-class honours Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant field. Excellent written, oral communication skills and a high level of competence in the English language are essential. (See UCD’s policy on minimum English language requirements here.)

Stipend & fees: The successful candidate will receive a stipend of 18,000 per annum, full funding for UCD tuition fees for EU/non-EU applicants, and a research allowance of 4,000 per annum. The position is funded for four years, and subject to satisfactory progress.
Application procedure: Applicants should submit their CV, transcript, a cover letter and names and contact details of two academic referees, as a single .pdf document to budi.zhao@ucd.ie.

Application deadline: 15th Sep 2020
