Postdoc in large eddy simulatin (Hamburg)
The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M) is an internationally re-nowned centre for climate research located in Hamburg, Germany. The MPI-M provides a vibrant international and interdisciplinary environment for conduct-ing scientific research as well as access to state-of-the-art scientific facilities. The institute is located in the heart of one of Europe鈥檚 most liveable cities, and is embedded in an environment known worldwide for its breadth of climate re-search.

Postdoctoral Scientist (W074)
The successful applicant will use large-eddy simulation over large and realistic domains to study factors influencing cloudiness and its mesoscale organiza-tion in the tropics. The project will contribute to the development and applica-tion of the MPI-M global storm-resolving and large-eddy implementation of ICON, and be closely linked to conceptual and observational work at the insti-tute on related topics. The successful applicant will be funded through the EU CONSTRAIN project and will work closely with the European community of sci-entists in that project, as well as with observational data, and scientists, from the recent EUREC4A field campaign.
Responsibilities:
鈥?Use large-eddy simulation to study factors influencing the observed structure and mesoscale organization of cloudiness over the Atlantic.
鈥?Contribute to the development of the ICON Large-eddy simulation con-figuration for studying cloud feedbacks globally.
鈥?Disseminate results of research through usual forums (papers, confer-ences).
鈥?Actively contribute to the vibrant intellectual culture of the institute.
Qualifications/Experience
鈥?A PhD in physics, atmospheric science, or a related science, preferably with research experience in the area of atmospheric convection and/or cloud-climate-circulation interactions.
鈥?Excellent programming skills and experience working with atmospheric or fluid dynamic models, very large data sets (Tera to PetaByte) and simulation (PetaFLOP) workflows on Tier I supercomputing facilities.
鈥?An ability to think conceptually and to effectively communicate (both writ-ten and orally) their research to colleagues and the scientific community more broadly.
Employment conditions
鈥?The position is offered for 3 years.
鈥?Payment will be in accordance with German public service positions (TVoeD E14), including extensive social security plans. The conditions of employment, including upgrades and duration, follow the rules of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Sciences and those of the German civil service.
