2020 Theoretical and Computational Chemistry Ph.D. Program in Dallas, Texas, USA
|
|
2020 fall openings in theoretical and computational chemistry ph.d. program in dallas, texas, usa applications are invited for positions in the four-year theoretical and computational chemistry (tcc) ph.d. program hosted in the department of chemistry at southern methodist university (smu), dallas, texas, usa. the smu high performance computer center provides outstanding computational facilities (930 tflops). ph.d. students will work in a cutting-edge research area with one of the four tcc faculty members (see below for more information) in a vibrant, friendly and supportive research environment. interdisciplinary research with the experimental chemistry faculty and the departments of biological science, computer science and mathematics is strongly encouraged in our program. each ph.d. student will be supported through annual stipend of $25,000, full tuition waiver, and coverage with quality health insurance. additional fellowships available to outstanding candidates. potential candidates should be motivated and creative, with computational skills and solid background in at least one of the following areas: computational chemistry, quantum chemistry, physical chemistry, physics, biophysics, material science, mathematics, or computer science. candidates should preferably hold a bachelor or master in computational and theoretical chemistry/biology/physics; a master’s degree is not required for admission to the ph.d. program. gre is required for all applicants. a minimum score of 80 for toefl is required for candidates with english as second language. current tcc faculty members: professor doran bennett (email: doranb@smu.edu; group webpage: https://mesosciencelab.com) the bennett group develops new computational approaches to multiscale simulations of biological and artificial materials. we use multiscale models to integrate experimental data measured on different length- and timescales and develop new conceptual models to guide experimental interpretation. professor and chair elfi kraka (email: ekraka@smu.edu; group webpage: https://sites.smu.edu/dedman/catco/) catco is devoted to the development of new quantum chemical methods and their application to solve pending chemical problems. active research topics include: i) dirac-exact relativistic methods; ii) local vibrational mode theory for molecules and solids, iii) the unified reaction valley approach (urva), iv) automated protein structure analysis (apsa); machine learning in chemistry and medicinal chemistry. professor devin matthews (email: damatthews@smu.edu; group webpage: https://matthewsresearchgroup.webstarts.com) the matthews group focuses on using and developing accurate theoretical methods to study molecules, reactions, clusters, and extended systems. in particular, we specialize in ab initio ( meaning "from the beginning" ) methods based on quantum mechanics, combining concepts and techniques from chemistry, physics, mathematics, and computer science. professor peng tao (email: ptao@smu.edu; group webpage: https://faculty.smu.edu/ptao) the tao group develops innovative computational methodology to explore protein dynamics and evolution. we are the pioneer to formulate the theoretical framework characterizing enzymatic catalysis driven protein evolution. our research also focuses on data-driven chemistry through machine learning and artificial intelligence technologies. southern methodist university is a private nonsectarian institution founded in 1911, and is committed to academic freedom and open inquiry. the picturesque smu campus hosting 6,452 undergraduate and 5,337 graduate students is nestled in the bustling dallas/fort worth metropolitan area. dallas is one of the fastest-growing cities in the united states, and is home to a number of technology and industrial businesses, both established and starting-up. forbes ranks dallas as #2 in best places for business and careers. interested candidates should send one pdf document including (1) a cv with a list of peer-reviewed publications (if any); (2) available transcripts to the professor whose research interests you the most. for further information about the research groups please visit research websites. the official application has to be submitted through the official link of smu graduate program. to apply, please visit the website and choose theoretical and computational chemistry ph.d. program from the department of chemistry https://gradadmission.smu.edu/apply/ happy new year!!! 新年快乐!!! smu_tcc.jpg |
