德国DESY实验室 Title of the research: Particle tracking simulations for the European X-ray Free-Electron Laser (XFEL) More description of research topic: The European X-ray Free-Electron Laser (XFEL) is driven by a ~1.7 km long superconducting linear accelerator followed by three undulator systems. It is in user operation since Sept. 2017. The maximum beam power can be generated is more than 500 kW. A common issue for high power machines is the control of beam losses, since the beam losses can cause damages to different components of the machine. Thus it is crucial to understand possible beam losses that can be generated by the beam halo and other insertion components (e.g. slotted foil, dechirper). For this purpose, the project may involve the following aspects: 1) particle tracking simulations based on the simulation code BDSIM (a toolkit of GEANT4); 2) studies related to beam optics and beam dynamics issues (e.g. compression, wakefield): use of other simulation codes (e.g. Elegant, MAD) may also needed; 3) studies related to free electron laser applications (e.g. ultra-short photon pulse, fresh-lasing technic); 4) she/he may also participate in the European XFEL operation (as an operator). The tasks and plan for the PhD student/Postdoc will depend on the individual interest and the duration of her/his stay. Complementary stipend to CSC scholarship can be discussed with the supervisor. Specific requirements: Master or PhD in physics; Preferred knowledge or experience in accelerator physics or particle physics; Interest in programming and simulations; Experience/familiar with programming in C++ or Python; Knowledge in GEANT4/MAD/ROOT is an advantage; Fluent in spoken and written English.
