Influence of the crystal characterization of CsI thin film for x-ray image detectors (Proceedings Paper) Author(s): Shuang Liu; Xu Chen; Zhiyong Zhong; Charles M. Falco Paper Abstract Powder CsI crystal has been deposited with vacuum thermal evaporation on three different kinds of substrates: Si, SiO2/Si and Pt/Si. We have analyzed and observed these CsI films with different depth and various preparation conditions by XRD measurement. Through analyzing, we find that in such process condition the crystal state of CsI film has a strong relationship with the crystal structure of substrate, and non-crystal substrate goes against crystallization. By contrasting standard XRD diagram of CsI(Tl), we discover that with the influence of the surface structure of substrate, CsI crystal film has a preferred orientation in (200) crystal face. We also notice that the preferred orientation of CsI film has a close relation with the depth of the film: the preferred orientation has been weakened as the depth of film turning from 70μm to 100μm. |

Influence of the film deposition rate and humidity on the properties of thin CsI photocathodes Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors and Associated Equipment Volume 523, Issue 3, 11 May 2004, Pages 323-333 Abstract Optical and photoemissive properties of CsI photocathodes (PCs) grown at two different evaporation rates (1 and 0.04 nm/s) have been investigated. The surface morphology of 300-nm-thick CsI films was also studied by means of atomic force microscopy. After 24-h exposure to humid air, properties of PCs grown at the slowest evaporation rate resulted affected more than those obtained at the fastest rate, making this latter more adequate for the photocathode preparation. Structural transformation of CsI thin film photocathodes under exposure to air and UV irradiation Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors and Associated Equipment Volume 447, Issue 3, 11 June 2000, Pages 614-618 Abstract Transmission electron microscopy has been employed to study the structure of polycrystalline CsI thin films and its transformation under exposure to humid air and UV irradiation. The catastrophic degradation of CsI thin film photocathode performance is shown to be associated with the film dissolving followed by its re-crystallization. This results in the formation of large lumps of CsI crystal on the substrate surface, so that the film becomes discontinuous and its performance as a photocathode is permanently degraded. No change in the surface morphology and the film crystalline structure was observed after the samples were UV irradiated. Progress in the production of CsI and diamond thin film photocathodes Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors and Associated Equipment Volume 553, Issues 1-2, 11 November 2005, Pages 157-164 Abstract The comparison between the quantum efficiency of photocathodes coated with thin CsI films obtained by thermal evaporation and, for the first time, by Ar ion-beam sputtering is reported. The sensitivity of photocathodes has been found to be strongly dependent on the morphology and roughness of the evaporated and sputtered CsI films. The effect of surface roughness on four different substrates has been investigated and is discussed. Preliminary measurement results on the photoemissivity of diamond films are also given.
