All of the aforementioned age-hardenable particles exert some type of force on gliding dislocations and thus contribute to strength. The effectiveness of these precipitates on strengthening depends upon the type, size, morphology, spacing, distribution, coherency, order, volume fraction and number density, and whether these particles are sheared or looped (bypassed) by dislocations. Gliding dislocations either cut or bypass agehardenable precipitates and play a critical role on the overall slip behavior of the alloy.
