Two PhD Positions Available in Department of Wood Science and Engineering at Oregon State University About the advisor Dr. Juan Du will join the Department of Wood Science and Engineering (WSE) in College of Forestry at Oregon State University (OSU) as an assistant professor in September 2019. She has research interests in data analytics for quality improvement in advanced manufacturing systems. Specifically, her research focus on (1) Data fusion and data analytics for quality improvement: multi-channel functional data analytics by integration of engineering domain knowledge, advanced statistical model, machine learning, signal processing and operations research. (2) Modeling, monitoring and analysis for multistage manufacturing systems: developing a final-quality oriented process monitoring strategy for key variable selection, condition change detection, and anomaly detection of manufacturing processes. (3) Surrogate Modeling, system optimization and control of manufacturing systems: sparse learning modeling and system optimization for computer experiments of complex manufacturing systems. Her research has been published in flag journals including IEEE transactions and ASME transactions. She is a referee for top journals including Technometrics, IEEE Transactions on Automation Science and Engineering, and top conferences including IEEE International Conference on Automation Science and Engineering (CASE) and ASME Manufacturing Science and Engineering Conference (MSEC). She is also the recipient of multiple awards including 2018 Best Refereed Paper Finalist Award from INFORMS, Quality, Statistics and Reliability (QSR) Section, and 2018 Joint Research Conference Travel Award from American Statistical Association (ASA), Quality and Productivity Section. Prior to joining OSU, Dr. Du earned her Ph.D. Degree in Department of Industrial Engineering and Management at Peking University (PKU), co-advised by Dr. Jianjun Shi (Georgia Tech, member of NAE) and Dr. Xi Zhang (PKU). She is a visiting scholar in H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Georgia Tech for about two years during her PhD study. She got her bachelor degree in Composite Materials and Engineering in Honors School of Harbin Institute of Technology. Now Dr. Juan Du is seeking talented and motivated graduate students to join her research group. The preferred starting time would be Fall 2019 or Spring 2020. Applicants with an interest in data analytics/machine learning for advanced wood manufacturing are encouraged to apply. Financial support ($15,318 ~$25,019 per year) will be provided. The PhD student can also apply for dual PhD major in the PhD study and get the dual PhD degree. For example, the applicant can get both the wood science degree and civil engineering /industrial engineering/statistics/computer science degree. Position Description Applicants with a B.S. or M.S. in in Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Automation, Wood Science, Forest, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science/Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related field are encouraged to apply. Other majors can also be considered if the applicant has a strong interest or motivation in data analytics/machine learning for advanced wood manufacturing. Applicants should: 1) possess the ability to work independently, as well as in a team; 2) have fine scientific writing skills and fluency (both oral and written) in English. The minimum requirement is TOEFL 93 and 18 for each part of test or IELTS 7.0; 3) have some programming experience (e.g., MATLAB, R, Python, etc.). Preferred qualifications: • Familiarity with Finite Element Analysis (FEA); • Familiarity with R, MATLAB or Python. Interested applicants should contact Dr. Du directly.
