friedrich schiller university jena connects people and ideas, science and business, universities and non-university research institutions. rooted in the heart of germany and connected throughout the world, the university and its partners shape a lively and productive scientific and economic region. at the otto schott institute for materials research, chair of materials science at the faculty of physics and astronomy of friedrich schiller university jena, one position for a research assistant (m/f/d) (phd student) for 30 hours/week is vacant as of 15.06.2019 or later.

research focus for the position is: creation and understanding of protein nanofibers and protein nanofiber based scaffolds.

required qualifications:
1. a recently obtained university degree (msc or diploma) in materials science (preferred), or experimental polymer physics or physical/organic chemistry or biochemistry with excellent study results.
2. research experience in one or more of the following fields: materials science, biomaterials, proteins and/or biopolymers, tissue regeneration.
3. research experience in the field of materials fabrication (protein based materials, biomaterials, scaffolds,polymers, polymers, hydrogels) and materials characterization (afm, dls etc.).
4. excellent oral and written english and/or german language skills communication and didactic skil.ls

main tasks:
1. fabrication/synthesis of protein nanofibers;
2. creation, characterization and understanding (structure-property relationships) of degradable protein nanofiber based scaffolds;
3. development of new, groundbreaking materials concepts; participation in the preparation of applications for third-party funding and in project management;
4. in addition, the applicants are expected to work on their further scientific qualification, e.g. a doctorate.


the position is initially for 2 years (part time, 75%).
