Description: Fibre-reinforced polymers (FRPs) are gaining increasing acceptance by structural engineers for the mechanical strengthening of structural elements. With increasing environmental concerns with regard to present day construction, further emphasis is being placed on the use of sustainable construction materials such as engineering wood products for the development of mid and high rise engineered structures. This research will develop new hybrid engineered components that are of greater reliability, higher stiffness and strength where the mechanical properties of the materials will be optimised. Experimental testing will be undertaken in state of the art facilities and will be complemented using nonlinear numerical analysis using the finite element package ANSYS. Outputs: A minimum of four world leading journal papers will be outputted from each PhD study thesis. Journals that are targeted will include: Composites Part b: Engineering, Construction and Building Materials, Composite Structures, Engineering Structures, ASCE Journal of Structural Engineering, ASCE Journal of Civil Engineering Materials. The candidates will gain extensive skills and experience in the following: • experimental test design • experimental execution and instrumentation • analytical procedures • advanced numerical analysis using finite element analysis • communication via oral presentation • communication via report writing and thesis writing Supervisor: Dr. Gary Raftery is recognised as an international leader on the topic with numerous world leading journal publications of high quality and impact which are highly recognised. He has a Scopus index of 8. He has won several awards for both his teaching, research supervision and impact and works closely with his team of PhD students while training and mentoring them during their research. He has been awarded two prestigious international fellowships to date to facilitate international research visits to top universities in Norway and USA.
