Word Origin for endo- from Greek, from endon within. Word Origin and History for endo- word-forming element meaning "inside, within, internal," comb. form of Greek endon "in, within," literally "in the house of". cytosis: 1. Suffix referring to cells, as in anisocytosis (inequality in the size of red blood cells), elliptocytosis (elliptical red cells), and phagocytosis (ingestion of cells). 2. Suffix connoting an increase in cells, as in leukocytosis (increase in white blood cells) and lymphocytosis (increase in lymphocytes). ----------------------- The prefix (phago- or phag-) means to eat, consume, or destroy. It is derived from the Greek phagein, which means to consume. Related suffixes include: (-phagia), (-phage), and (-phagy). Phagocytosis (phago-cyt-osis) - the process of engulfing and destroying microbes, such as bacteria, or foreign particles by phagocytes. ----------------------- pino-, pin- (Greek: a combining form confused between three Greek roots and may mean "hunger", "dirt", or "drink"; and there is one Latin form referring to the "pine tree"  .pinocyte, pinocytic, pinocytosis, pinocytotic [Greek, "drink"]: The inbibition [drinking]; of liquids by cells; i.e., absorption of liquids by cells, especially the mechanism by which cells ingest extracellular fluid and its contents. |

有一种说法认为： endocytosis是内吞，一般是受体介导的（receptor-mediated)，具有“目的”性。 pinocytosis是胞饮，简单的说就是cell drinking，把细胞周围的体液（含特殊溶质在内）一起喝掉，这个过程的nonspecific and non-absorptive。 但也有说法认为，endocytosis 包含pinocytosis and phagocytosis，后两者之间存在细微的差别，前者是cell drinking， 后者是cell eating。参见wiki。。 不管是哪一种，你就记得pinocytosis是无差别喝掉就行了。 |
