Opportunity for Ph.D. Graduate Research Assistants

Prof. Venkat Selvamanickam in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Houston is seeking to fill several positions for Ph.D. Graduate Research Assistants in the field of superconductor fabrication, characterization and testing and semiconductor growth, device fabrication, testing and applications development. Applicants should have demonstrated at least two years of laboratory research experience in the areas of advanced materials processing/characterization/testing, semiconductor device design/fabrication/testing or modeling/simulation.

The Ph.D. Graduate Research Assistants will work on projects such as metal organic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE) for nanoscale defect engineering of oxide superconductors; heteroepeitaxial growth of insulating and semiconductor thin films on flexible substrates; strain characterization and optimization using X-ray Diffraction electron microscopy and modeling; mechanical property optimization of round superconductor wires; electromagnetic studies on flux pinning characteristics of superconductors in high magnetic fields at cryogenic temperatures; design, construction and testing of superconducting coils/magnets; MOVPE of compound semiconductors on flexible substrates by roll-to-roll processing; design, fabrication and testing of flexible electronic semiconductor devices for RF, high-power and sensors applications.  Details of these projects can be found in https://selva.me.uh.edu/.

Research assistants in Prof. Selva’s group receive exceptional mentorship not only in conducting intensive, milestone-driven scientific research but also in broad engineering skill sets at his unique facilities. All his research assistants benefit from excellent day-to-day coaching from the many research faculty, scientific and engineering staff in his group, on critical thinking skills to solve complex research problems, hands-on expertise with unique, industry-scale, state-of-the-art equipment and industry-standard safety training and best practices. Hence, students in Prof. Selva’s group are uniquely prepared to tackle scientific and engineering challenges which are uncommon in academia.

The deadline for application is March 1, 2019.  Application package must be submitted online.  For detailed guideline and requirements of the PhD application, please visit https://www.me.uh.edu/graduate/application.
