Senior Group leader position at Songshan Lake Materials Laboratory (Dongguan)

Project Out-of-equilibrium behavior represents an essential characteristic of life. The active properties of living systems require the integration of a power stimulus to allow active functions and interactive adaption of these functions away from thermodynamic equilibrium. The most exciting feature of these systems is that the continuous energy-driven processes allow the emergence of new functions, such as sustained oscillations, formation of dynamic reaction compartments and unidirectional motion. This project aims to develop bioinspired dynamic systems that are operating under out-of-equilibrium conditions. These systems will be built using bio-molecular building blocks, like proteins and nucleic acids, which can be combined with living systems and their functions rely on the same chemical fuels as that of Mother Nature. Some of these architectures emulate dissipative assemblies similar as found in biological systems and hence these structures are a step forward in relation to materials displaying life-like features. Work environment The research project will be carried out by the newly established Biomaterials and Bio-nanotechnology group at Songshan Lake Materials Laboratory Dongguan (please see https://www.sslab.org.cn/ for more details). In the context of collaborative research on biomaterials, the group will not only provide state-of-the-art bio(nano)structures but also develop physical tools to understand such bioinspired systems and to investigate their underlying working principles. As leader of this group, you will supervise the synthesis and characterization of bio-macromolecules (e.g. nucleic acids and proteins) and related biohybrid systems. Moreover, you will be in close contact with research groups in house and researchers at DWI-Leibniz Institute for Interactive Materials in Germany. Job requirements - at least two years post-doctoral experience; - expertise on biomaterials, protein- or DNA nanotechnology; - background in chemistry or biotechnology of peptides, proteins or nucleic acids; - excellent publication record; - excellent communication skills in English and Chinese; - first experience in acquiring third party funding.
