China To be published by IGI Global: http://www.igi-global.com/requests/details.asp?ID=629 Introduction Rapid developments in computing, networking and communications lead to tremendous advances in multimedia technology, including profound changes in the ways of multimedia access, distribution and consumption. Streaming media is one of the most exciting and active topics with continuing significant progress in the area of multimedia research, where streaming media has been experiencing dramatic growth and stepped into mainstream media communications. In the past decade streaming media has had great success in network broadcasting, distance learning, digital library, and video on demand (VOD) among others. Motivated by its wide-ranging application potential, great efforts have been (and are being) dedicated to the research and development on steaming media to attack technical challenges such as multimedia adaptation, transmission, delivery architecture, security, etc. Thus, there exists a strong need for an edited book that will present and dissect the latest developments of novel architectures, techniques and applications for streaming media as well as current landscape changes, to keep readers abreast of the current research and development trends in the constantly changing area. Objective of the Book This edited book is intended to be a collection of tutorials, surveys, and original contributions that address the up-to-date research findings in streaming media. The primary objective of this book is to cover state-of-the-art research and developments, practical applications, as well as emerging trends in streaming media. The book aims to acquaint the scholars and practitioners involved in the research and development of streaming media with the most updated reference on a wide range of related topics. The book will also present some promising ideas that could be pursued in further research. Target Audience The target audience of this book would be those interested in various aspects of streaming media. This book is meant to be accessible to audiences including researchers, developers, engineers, and innovators working in the relevant areas. The largest audience will be the academics, industry professionals and researchers who aspire to learn the recent progress and future trends of streaming media. This book can also serve as a solid advanced-level supplement to the courses of media processing and communications for senior undergraduates and postgraduates. Recommended Topics (include, but are not limited to, the following) • Fundamentals of streaming media • Novel architectures and protocols for streaming media • Peer-to-Peer architecture for streaming media • Content delivery network for streaming media • Distributed media streaming • State-of-the-art multimedia coding and delivery techniques • Media resource adaptation for streaming media • QoS control for streaming media • Wireless/mobile media streaming • Streaming media over heterogeneous networks • Streaming media server • Security issues in streaming media • Digital right management for streaming media • Indexing, organization and retrieval for streaming media applications • Knowledge discovery in streaming media • Design and deployment of practical streaming media systems • IPTV media delivery • Future trends and promising directions in streaming media Submission Procedure Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before June 30, 2009, a 2-3 page chapter proposal clearly explaining the mission and concerns of his or her proposed chapter. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by July 15, 2009 about the status of their proposals and sent chapter guidelines. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by August 30, 2009. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis. Contributors may also be requested to serve as reviewers for this project. Publisher This book is scheduled to be published by IGI Global (formerly Idea Group Inc.), publisher of the “Information Science Reference” (formerly Idea Group Reference), “Medical Information Science Reference,” and “IGI Publishing” imprints.
