mark 是动词
mark 前后各一名词, 即使不写, 名词仍然存在
有意明述时可选择在名词前后外加(含动词)从句:
... PENETRATION (入侵) that the South would make INTO (进入) Union territory << 加 that 从句结构更明显
或求简洁用不含动词的手法
... northward penetration at its farthest** << 故意让 it 紧跟 penetration, 读者不必质疑 it 代表什么
