The Nano-Energy and Smart System Laboratory led by Prof. Yunlong Zi in the Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering, the Chinese University of Hong Kong seeks to recruit 1 Ph.D. candidate, and 1-2 Postdoctoral Fellow (Postdoc) or Research Assistant (RA), with a strong background in energy harvesting devices & system. The Ph.D. candidate position will start from Aug. 1st, 2019, and usually last for 4 years; and the Postdoc/RA position can start from Jan 1st, 2019 and will be for 1.5-2 years (tentatively), depending on the funding situation and mutual agreement.
As a successful candidate you will work on an exciting cross-disciplinary project that mainly focuses on the high-performance triboelectric nanogenerators and systems for kinetic energy harvesting. You will engage in the fundamental research, engineering, and development of this emerging technology, and explore related applications. Disciplines involved include applied physics, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and materials science. For postdoc, you will be encouraged to develop new research directions, not limited to the group’s current research focus. Applications are welcomed from highly-motivated, innovative and energetic individuals to join our team.
Primary Job Responsibilities:
• Conduct research with journal papers and/or patents as outcomes
• Lead a research direction (for Postdoc only)
• Be involved in proposal writings for the group (for Postdoc only)
Preferred Qualifications and Expectations:
• Basic requirements
(1) For Postdoc: Ph.D. in physics, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, materials science, mechanics, chemistry or other related disciplines
(2) For Ph.D. candidate and Research Assistant: Bachelor or Master Degrees in related disciplines.
• Proven track record of first author publications and research experience (for undergraduate applicants, evaluations will be based on GPA, academic-related activity records, and awards.)
• Preferences will be given to applicants with strong experiences in:
(1) Triboelectric Nanogenerators or other kinetic energy harvesting technology
(2) Electromechanical systems modeling or experiments
(3) Electronic circuit systems related to kinetic energy harvesting
• A good team-worker who can also work independently when necessary
• A creative, motivated and innovative individual who seeks to forward the project
• Excellent communication and written skills, with the drive to publish first author papers

2) CV with qualifications and publication list
3) Names and contact information for 3 professional references.
About the PI:
Dr. Yunlong Zi received his Ph.D. in Physics from Purdue University in 2014; his B.Eng. in Materials Science and Engineering from Tsinghua University in 2009. Dr. Zi worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow in the School of Materials Science and Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology in 2014-2017. (Supervisor: Prof. Zhong Lin Wang, Hightower Chair and Regents’ Professor, Foreign Academician of CAS) Dr. Zi joined the Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering at the Chinese University of Hong Kong as an Assistant Professor in November 2017. His current research interests focus on high-efficiency kinetic energy harvesting mainly through triboelectric nanogenerators (TENG), TENG triggered high-voltage applications, and self-powered smart systems. As the 1st author, his research has been published in top-notch journals, including Nature Nanotechnology, Nature Communications, Advanced Materials, Nano Letters, ACS Nano, Nano Energy, and etc. He was honored as the winner of MRS Postdoctoral Award by Materials Research Society in 2017, as the first recipient from Georgia Tech; and one of “5 students who are transformation makers” by Purdue University in 2013, as highlighted in Purdue homepage.
