The problem of relative permittivity of mixed solvents (denoted by for simplicity) was theoretically studied by Debye and Onsager [34]. Onsager derived the following equation: This equation can be written with good approximation as , indicating that the permittivity of the mixed solvent changes linearly between A and B, if it is plotted against the volume fraction of the constituent solvents. When the interaction between the constituent solvents is weak, this linear relation holds well. However, when the interaction is strong, a large deviation from linearity is observed. Figure 2.9 shows the relationship between the relative permittivity and the volume fraction of mixtures of water and organic solvents. Because acetonitrile, acetone and tetrahydrofuran interact only weakly with water, near-linear relations are observed for their mixtures with water.
