This highly dynamic setting enables students and researchers to work across traditional boundaries of academic subjects and faculties. Job description: In the framework of the new SFB TRR247 „Heterogeneous Oxidation Catalysis in the Liquid Phase“, project C4 „Identifying Composition-Processing-Defect-Structure-Property Correlations in Continuous (La-Sr-)Fe-Co-O Thin Film Composition Spreads“, we are offering two PhD positions. The main focus of the first PhD student will be to systematically acquire correlations between composition, phase constitution, defect structures, surface constitution and catalytic activity in new oxide catalyst materials. To acquire such correlations, two metal oxide systems, one forming spinel (Fe-Co-O, e.g., CoFe2O4) and one forming perovskite (ABO3, (La-Sr)Co1-xFexO3) phases, will be investigated using continuous composition spread (CCS) thin films. These well-defined composition gradients are synthesized by reactive combinatorial sputtering at the Chair for MEMS materials (Prof. Dr. Alfred Ludwig) at the Institute for Materials. The crystal-, micro- and defect-structures will be analyzed by high-quality high-throughput characterization methods (EDX, XPS, RBS, XRD, SEM, AFM). The role of the second PhD student will be to provide fundamental insights into the interplay of composition, structure of active species and catalytic activity of these oxide materials by using atom probe tomography (APT) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) under the supervision of Jun.-Prof. Dr. Tong Li. The successful candidate will be working in the new research center for interface-dominated high-performance materials (ZGH) at Ruhr University Bochum, which houses a large and comprehensive suite of equipment dedicated to nanostructure analysis. This project will provide new experimental evidence on the surface species during oxygen evolution reaction for water electrolysis, thereby elucidating the role of the composition and defect structure in the OER activity and stability. We are looking for highly motivated scientists (m/f) with very good knowledge in the field of materials science, who dare to approach new, exciting and promising topics in an interdisciplinary environment and who have the ambition, with the available extraordinary experimental possibilities, to efficiently generate new scientific knowledge and publish the results. Your profile: • an excellent master degree in materials science or mechanical engineering, physics or chemistry, when the focus of the studies was on materials. Prior knowledge in the field of thin film processing and XRD is beneficial (PhD student 1). • an excellent master degree in materials science, inorganic chemistry or electrochemistry (PhD student 2) • ability to plan and organize the PhD project effectively • self-motivated and eager to learn It is expected from the future PhD student to work independently with high motivation, to work target-oriented in internal and external teams, to document results in databases, to publish results in the form of reports and scientific publications. You should have the ability to play a part in a multidisciplinary cooperation partner environment. Very good scientific, technical and communication skills as well as English (fluent in word and writing), are expected. Travel expenses for interviews cannot be refunded.
