Job description:
To date, it has not been possible to undertake a full three-dimensional (3D) structure and chemical characterization of the topmost atomic layers of electrocatalysts. Atom probe tomography (APT) provides uniquely powerful insights into the atomic-scale chemistry and structure of materials. The aim of this project is to provide fundamental insights into the interplay of composition, structure of active species, catalytic activity of spinel-type oxide by using APT and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). This project will provide new experimental evidence on the surface species during oxygen evolution reaction for water electrolysis, thereby elucidating the role of the composition and defect structure in the OER activity and stability. This PhD is a part of collaborative research projects (SFB TRR247, „Heterogeneous Oxidation Catalysis in the Liquid Phase“) between Ruhr University Bochum, University of Duisburg-Essen, MPI for Chemical Energy Conversion and Fritz Haber Institute. Within the subproject „Identifying Composition-Processing-Defect-Structure-Property Correlations in Continuous (La-Sr-)Fe-Co-O Thin Film Composition Spreads“ the candidate will cooperate with another PhD student, working on synthesis and characterization of thin film materials libraries.

The Ruhr-Universität Bochum is one of the leading research universities. The university draws its strengths from both the diversity and the proximity of scientific and engineering disciplines on a single, coherent campus. This highly dynamic setting enables students and researchers to work across traditional boundaries of academic subjects and faculties. The successful candidate will be working in the new research center for interface-dominated high-performance materials (ZGH) at Ruhr University Bochum, which houses a large and comprehensive suite of equipment dedicated to nanostructure analysis; the center is among the best facilities of its kind in the world. He or she will have access to world-class set of laboratories and more than 10 major microscopy platforms, including the state-of-the-art atom probe, aberration-corrected TEM, focused ion beam etc.
If the position is funded by third-party funds the employee has no teaching obligation. Travel expenses for interviews cannot be refunded. The candidate must have:
•          an excellent master degree in materials science, inorganic chemistry, or electrochemistry
•          a high level of spoken and written English

•          ability to plan and organize the PhD project effectively
•          can work in multicultural environment
•          self-motivated and eager to learn

The candidate may have:
•          a good knowledge of materials or chemistry characterisation techniques
•          had experiences in operating cyclic voltammetry to study electrochemical reactions
•          had a good knowledge of the crystallographic structure
