[交流] previous research suggested that our claims appeared to make sense

there is one puzzle on "apear to" in its application for essay that shall we use uncertain tone like apear to in our essay ,is that appropriate?

the original text what I am going to quote as follows :

By preventing … ,or preventing … ,iproniazid and imipramine apeared to increase …

I don't think so. The intransitive verbs can not be passive. We can say "I slept early last night", but we cannot say "Last night is slept by me early" (this is absurd!), because "sleep" can not be passive.

However, I aggree that any verb has its preterite.

if that is appear to, you can say: something appear(s) to do sth, blabla, ...; or you can say something is appeared to ....

I aggree with the form of the former phrase, but I don't think the latter one "sth is appeared to ..." is correctly used. The word "appear" seems not to have the passive form.
