Scripta Materialia - Article in Press, Accepted Manuscript Notch toughness of Cu-based bulk metallic glasses Peng Jiaa, Zhen-dong Zhua, Evan Mab and Jian Xua aShenyang National Laboratory for Materials Science, Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, 72 Wenhua Road, Shenyang, 110016, China bDepartment of Materials Science and Engineering, The Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland 21218, USA Received 18 November 2008; revised 13 March 2009; accepted 14 March 2009. Available online 20 March 2009. Abstract We have measured the notch toughness for a range of Cu-based bulk metallic glasses (BMGs). Alloying additions that enhance the glass-forming ability (GFA) are found to degrade the toughness. Within this particular family of Cu-BMGs, the toughness is more directly correlated with the strength (and consequently with the shear modulus or glass transition temperature), than with the Poisson¡¯s ratio. The Cu49Hf42Al9 BMG exhibits the best combination of the GFA and the toughness. Keywords: Metallic glasses; Toughness; Elastic property; Cu alloys [ Last edited by hslining on 2009-9-21 at 23:26 ] |

Recovery of the ability to shear stress relaxation of thermally aged bulk and ribbon glassy Pd40Cu30Ni10P20 V.A. Khonika, N.T.N. Nguena, S.V. Khonika and N.A. Divakovab aDepartment of General Physics, Voronezh State Pedagogical University, Lenin Street 86, 394043 Voronezh, Russia bResearch Centre, Voronezh State University, Universitetskaya Square 1, 394006 Voronezh, Russia Received 23 November 2008; revised 14 March 2009; accepted 16 March 2009. Available online 20 March 2009. Abstract Isothermal torque relaxation measurements of ribbon and bulk glassy Pd40Cu30Ni10P20 samples i) in the initial state, ii) after nearly full structural relaxation and iii) subsequent fast quenching from the supercooled liquid state have been performed. It has been found that while structural relaxation strongly decreases the torque relaxation rate, fast quenching of aged samples from the supercooled liquid state recovers the ability to stress relaxation. The degree of the recovery, however, strongly depends on the temperature of subsequent testing. Keywords: metallic glasses; stress relaxation; structural relaxation; recovery |
