Project description:

Optical networks form an integral part of the world-wide communication infrastructure and nowadays over 95% of all digital data traffic is carried over fibres. Meeting the ever-growing information rate demands has become of utmost importance for optical communication networks. Optical fibre channel is nonlinear, that is, its refractive index, is dependent on signal intensity. At high power densities, the combination of fibre nonlinear effects, dispersion as well as laser phase fluctuation and transceiver noise will lead to nonlinear distortions, limiting both achievable capacities, spectral efficiencies and transmission distances. New research and development is critically required not only for finding new native nonlinear communication techniques but also transferring them into practical, error-resilient networks.

This project will focus on understanding the fundamental limits and optimising the physical topologies of optical communication networks from the aspects of physical channel properties, software-defined transceiver, complex network and data-driven intelligence. We will aim to design high-capacity, low-latency and resilient optical communication networks that enable flexible and intelligent access to the frequency grid, overall throughout and network security. A combination of multidimensional coding, machine learning, probabilistic techniques, complex network and information theory will be employed to monitor, analyse, repair and predict the signal transmission in nonlinear optical communication networks. This project aims to maximise the overall capacity and resources, based on the concept of intelligent elastic optical networks and software-defined transceivers. The PhD candidate will be supervised by Dr Tianhua Xu.

Eligibility: Candidates with a 1st or 2.1 UK Honours degree or equivalent in Communication, Electrical Engineering or related subjects. Applicants with a background in: optical communication networks, machine learning, coding theory, complex network and information theory are deemed advantageous.

Funding: The studentship covers the tuition fees at the UK/EU rate and standard stipend currently ¡ê14,553/year. International candidates are welcome to apply but would need to self-fund the difference between the fee rates.
