The Department of Chemistry at Portland State University (PSU) is seeking applicants to join its Ph.D. program. PSU is Oregon’s largest university, and offers the only chemistry Ph.D. in the Portland metro area. The department focuses on three broad research areas: biological, materials, and environmental chemistry. Biological inquiry consists of natural product and lipid biosynthesis, drug discovery and structural biology, nucleic acids and protein biophysics, and molecular medicine; environmental chemistry research includes instrumentation development for atmospheric and environmental monitoring, chemical toxicology, and carcinogenesis; materials chemistry research focuses on the design and synthesis of new nanomaterials for medical imaging, solar energy conversion, biointerfaces, biomedical diagnostics, and nanoelectronics. The PSU Chemistry graduate program is designed to provide students solid training in the general areas of Chemistry, while tailoring their research interests to any of the three areas. Candidates interested in organic synthesis, supramolecular chemistry, organic materials, and polymers are especially welcomed to apply. Located in the Pacific Northwest’s high technology industry cluster, PSU offers graduate students active collaborations with the region’s top researchers. The chemistry department cultivates partnerships with local research institutions such as Oregon Health and Science University, Pacific Northwest National Laboratories, and is a member of Oregon Nanoscience and Microtechnologies Institute. Graduates from our program are employed in both academia and industry, including semiconductor, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and chemical analysis. The Chemistry Department is in a period of rapid growth and has been successfully recruiting outstanding faculty to join our program. We are consistently profitable in securing grants from the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and other funding agencies to support our research programs. We have a soaring commitment to add state-of-the-art instrumentation to assist our research endeavors. The Center for Electron Microscopy and Nanofabrication at PSU is a signature research facility that houses the latest instruments in specimen imaging and is shared by university and industrial researchers. The Oregon Translational Research and Drug Development Institute, funded by the State of Oregon, provide screening and optimization for new chemical entities and validate targets for disease management. Both establishments represent the university and state’s concerted effort to support science and technology growth. Portland State University resides in downtown Portland, and is surrounded by numerous cafes, pubs, and restaurants. Adjacent to the university is the Portland cultural district, home to the Portland Symphony, the Portland Center for the Performing Arts, the Portland Art Museum, and the Northwest Film Center. The city of Portland provides students with a unique experience where in minutes one can shed urban life for the great outdoors. Hiking, mountain biking, skiing, windsurfing, and kayaking are among the popular outdoor activities accessible to Portlanders.
