1 J. Appl. Phys. 105, 053908 (2009) Large magnetic refrigerant capacity in Gd71Fe3Al26 and Gd65Fe20Al15 amorphous alloys Q. Y. Dong, B. G. Shen, J. Chen, J. Shen, F. Wang, H. W. Zhang, and J. R. Sun State Key Laboratory for Magnetism, Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing 100190, People's Republic of China Magnetic entropy change and refrigerant capacity of Gd-based amorphous Gd71Fe3Al26 and Gd65Fe20Al15 alloys are investigated. The refrigerant capacities reach 750 and 726 J kg−1 for Gd71Fe3Al26 and Gd65Fe20Al15, respectively, which are much larger than those of all magnetocaloric materials ever reported. The peak values of magnetic entropy change under a field change of 0–5 T are 7.4 J kg−1 K−1 at 117.5 K and 5.8 J kg−1 K−1 at 182.5 K for Gd71Fe3Al26 and Gd65Fe20Al15, respectively. A very large refrigerant capacity and a considerable magnetic entropy change jointly make them attractive candidates for magnetic refrigerant. ©2009 American Institute of Physics 2 Scripta Materialia - Article in Press, Accepted Manuscript Nanoscale amorphization of severely deformed NiTi shape memory alloys M. Radial sections of the HPT discs facilitate the analysis of amorphous and crystalline phases arising at a nanoscale. Ultra thin amorphous ribbons forming at grain boundaries are intersected by shear bands. At higher deformation they transform into thicker amorphous bands containing nanocrystalline debris. In the case of planar sections, the presence of amorphous phase can be obscured by overlapping nanocrystals leading to moiré contrast. Abstract A new technique, involving nanoindentation and in-situ scanning probe microscopy at high temperature under an inert atmosphere, is used to study deformation of a Pt-based metallic glass. As temperature is increased into the super-cooled liquid regime, impressions made by nanoindentation flatten due to surface tension-driven viscous flow. In-situ measurements of shape recovery at various temperatures and times permit an estimation of the apparent activation energy for Newtonian-viscous flow. Available online 6 March 2009. Abstract Microstructural evolution of Zr55Cu30Al10Ni5 and Cu50Zr45Ti5 metallic glasses under 200 keV electron irradiation has been studied in situ by transmission electron microscopy. Zr55Cu30Al10Ni5, which has a wider supercooled liquid region, is found to be stable under electron irradiation and no crystallization is observed up to an irradiation fluence of 8.7×1026electrons/m2. In contrast, nanometer size crystalline Cu10Zr7 phases are formed in Cu50Zr45Ti5under electron irradiation. The partial crystallization is attributed to irradiation enhanced atom mobility.
