A model of the mechanics of serrated flow in an amorphous alloy

Abstract
A model is developed, of the mechanics of serrated flow in an amorphous alloy, with which it is possible to evaluate the serration amplitude (δσ) that would occur in a perfectly rigid machine, and to correct the applied extension rate ( ) at which serrated flow occurs in a conventional testing machine. The model mechanics is based on two criteria for yielding: two independent physical processes of serrated flow and plastic sliding and ageing-time (t)-dependent serrated flow. In agreement with the prediction from our model, the observed serration amplitude and the applied extension rate for compressive deformation of amorphous Pd78Cu6Si16 depend on the rigidity of the machine used. We also present an analysis of inhomogeneous plastic deformation and serrated flow behavior for amorphous Pd78Cu6Si16. At a commonly-used applied extension rate, the corrected serration amplitude attains 11% of the yield stress.
