To a mixt. of 400 mL THF and 165 g potassium carbonate at 50° was added 1 g triethylbenzylammonium chloride and then 232 g tri-Et methanetricarboxylate. After 1 h, 436 g of 1,2-dibromoethane was added. The mixt. was held at 60° for 1 h and then heated to 70 to 75° for 20 h. The reaction mixt. was worked up to give 338 g oil contg. 306 g TBTC (90.6% yield).
