The well blocks and the quoit should be replaced, when they are broken resulting in reeking and inflaming. Following steps should be taken when replacing:
(1) Cut off the channel that connects the coking chamber and the gas collector;
(2) Open the caps of the riser and the coal charging mouth;
(3) Extend the spray gun down into the coal charging mouth, and spray the cracks and concaves.
(4) Take off the quoit and the blocks with a crowbar, and clear off the residual graphite, tar and ashes;
(5) Spread the clay mortar modulated by water on the coal charging mouth, and posit the new blocks on it;
(6) The upper surface of the blocks should be 10 to 15 mm lower than the top of the neighbor oven, lest that the blocks should bulge when the graphite is filled in, caused by the motions of the blocks and the quoit when opening and closing the caps in the post-operational period;
(7) Spread the clay mortar on the slot of the well blocks, and put the new quoit into the slot (the quoit and the blocks should be pressed tightly, their upper surfaces should be in at the same horizontal plane, and their central point must be the crossing point of the axis of the corresponding coal charging mouths and that of the coking chamber);
(8) Seal the surrounding apertures with dilute clay mortar, close the coal charging mouth and the riser, and open up the flap valve.
In some coke-oven plant, the coal charging mouth is poured with clay cement (about 40%), 600# bauxite cement (10%), and 30mm clay bricks (50%), which makes it much more durable than that built with chamottes.
