[交流] PhD project on "Terahertz magnetism"

The group:
The “Terahertz Physics Group” studies phenomena that occur at extremely high frequencies in the so-called terahertz (THz) region
from about 1 to 30 THz. This spectral range is relatively unexplored, although it coincides with numerous fundamental motions in
condensed matter, for instance crystal-lattice vibrations (phonons), spin waves (magnons) and the scattering of conduction
electrons (momentum relaxation). To reveal and ultimately control the dynamics and coupling of these modes, we develop
sensitive optical methods based on ultrashort electromagnetic THz fields and optical laser pulses. To better understand our
experimental results, we work out simple theoretical models. Insights in these questions are relevant for applications in information
technology where bit rates are approaching the THz range, for instance in wireless networks and field effect transistors. We also
explore our results directly for applications in THz photonics, including the development of novel emitters, detectors and
modulators of broadband THz radiation.

Your task:
You will participate in a project on femtomagnetism of a newly funded Collaroborative Research Center (CRC) on Ultrafast Spin
Dynamics. The goal of this project is to reveal the coupling of spins in magnetic solids to the electronic and lattice degrees of
freedom on the ultrafast time scales of elementary interaction processes. For this purpose, you will set up a cutting-edge pumpprobe experiment with femtosecond lasers pulses in the visible and terahertz spectral range. An intense, tunable pump pulse will
be used to selectively excite specific resonances (e.g. magnons, phonons, electron-hole pairs). The impact of this perturbation on
observables such as magnetization and electronic conductivity is monitored in the time domain by a suitable probe pulse. This
approach will provide novel insights into both spin-electron and spin-lattice interactions in spintronic materials. You are given the
opportunity to undertake doctoral research and expected to participate in the Graduate School of the CRC.
Your qualification:
Completed university studies with a Master degree preferentially in physics.
Your experience:
Experience in at least one of the following areas: femtosecond laser spectroscopy, optics, solid-state physics, magnetism.
Your profile:
• Team spirit, endurance and enthusiasm for new ideas and topics
• Good English language skills
• Master in Physics with very good grades
• Knowledge on/experience in solid-state physics, magnetism or femtosecond lasers
