PhD recruitment at UNSW Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering Dr. Guozhen Liu, a ARC Future Fellow, is recognised for her innovative cross-disciplinary research in the area of analytical chemistry, nanotechnology, biosensors, and medical devices. Working closely with engineers, physicists and biologists, Dr Liu’s research team focuses on integrating advanced sensing technologies and nanotechnology into smart devices to tackle the challenges in Life Sciences, such as in vivo real-time molecular diagnostics, cellular response systems and precise therapeutics. Dr Liu was shortlisted in the Georgina Sweet Award for Women in Quantitative Biomedical Science in 2016, and she received an Academic Excellence Award for transdisciplinary research publications in 2017. Dr Liu is one of investigators of $40-million ARC Centre of Excellence for Nanoscale Biophotonics (CNBP, https://cnbp.org.au). Recently, Dr Liu has set up the CNBP at UNSW node (https://nanobiophotounsw.wordpress.com/). Dr Liu’s research covers the area of nanoscale analysis, stimuli-responsive nanoparticles, advanced sensing technologies and medical devices, with a focus on developing multifunctional theranostic tools for cancers and diseases. As part of CNBP, much of her research at Dr Liu’s group has a focus on applied research by “Creating Windows to the Body” where she modifies the biointerfaces for diagnostic medical devices, bioimaging and biomaterials as well as more fundamental research on real-time in vivo sensing, cell surface interactions and targeted drug delivery. Dr Liu’s team is interested in developing portable, wearable, and implantable devices for helping biologists to understand our body. Besides the biomedical research, the group is also interested in the development of assays and portable devices for food safety and early diagnosis of plant diseases.
