Magnetotelluric (MT) data analysis, based on the principle of stationary signal, is one of the most prevailing methods determining the spectra using variations on the Fourier transform (FT). Nevertheless MT data series are not stationary random signals, and can not meet the basic requirements for conventional approaches based on FT. Recently the Hilbert-Huang Transform (HHT) has tuned out to be a powerful tool for non-linear and non-stationary signals analysis. For the first time, this work proposes this advanced method to analyze MT data from two aspects through HHT: firstly pretreatment of the MT time series data is carried out by selecting MT data subset and noise suppression; secondly the impedance and apparent resistivity are determined using the HHT instantaneous spectrum. The results compellingly demonstrate that this method can significantly improve the quality of MT data, and stable and reliable estimation on the impedance tensor can be achieved because warp due to the non-stationary characteristics of MT data is greatly decreased. The HHT method is effective in analyzing MT data and classifying meaningful geologic information. |
