1Nanoindentation of metallic glasses Offering some of the highest specific strength and resilience values known among bulk materials, metallic glasses have the potential to revolutionize the field of materials science and engineering. Through effectively probing the fundamental mechanism responsible for deformation in these materials, nanoindentation has the potential to provide the answers necessary for their practical application. 2Bulk nano-crystalline alloys Bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) Fe–B–Y–Nb–Cu, 2 mm in diameter, were successfully annealed to become bulk nano-crystalline alloys (BNCAs) with α-Fe crystallite 11–13 nm in size. A ‘crystallization-and-stop’ model was proposed to explain this behavior. Following this model, alloy-design criteria were elucidated and confirmed successful on another Fe-based BMG Fe–B–Si–Nb–Cu, 1 mm in diameter, with crystallite sizes 10–40 nm. It was concluded that BNCAs can be designed in general by the proposed criteria. 3 Metallic glasses...on the threshold Metallic glasses, first discovered nearly 50 years ago, are currently among the most actively studied metallic materials. Available in sections up to several centimeters, with many novel, applicable properties, metallic glasses have also been the focus of research advancing our understanding of liquids and of glasses in general. Here we outline some key features of the glassy state in metals. The next few years will bring exciting advances, as we are on the threshold of exploiting new opportunities for microstructural design, opening up much broader application of the fascinating materials formed from metallic glasses and their derivatives.
