1.The aromatic surface area of the phen ligand was too small to insert into the base pairs of DNA, which might be the main reasion.

The phen ligand`s aromatic surface area with  relatively small size could not meet the requirement of insertion into the base pairs of DNA, which might be the main reason.

Ssince the decrease in π-π interactions between phen ligands of [Ni(phen)(H2O)4]2+ cations with respective to its free form, which could be dimerized or oligomerized through π stacking in solution,a hyperchromism effect was found.
