How pollution is changing the ocean’s chemistry --- Triona Mcgrath, TED

|
As the speaker said, ocean provides food, including 20 percent of protein to feed the human population, jobs, medicine, and so on. Ocean also provides half oxygen we human beings breathe, moderates our earth’s climate. Although ocean is very vast, covering two thirds of our planet, it is affected by human pollution, worse and worse. 25 percent of carbon dioxide in the air, one of the green houses that lead to climate change, is dissolved in the ocean, which is changing the ocean’s chemistry. When carbon dioxide dissolves in the ocean, it increases the ocean’s acidity, the process of which is called acidification. As the ocean’s acidity increases, many bad things happen. For example, corals will be dissolved, like some kind of sea creatures’ shell, which provide food to many kinds of sea animals. Then the ocean’s food chain may be changed, too (not from the speaker). As the speaker showed, acidification of ocean is getting faster, and is not easy to recover. All we can do now, is reducing emission of carbon dioxide and decreasing the speed of acidification of ocean. |
